Rolling
Hills Country Day School was founded in 1961 by
Evelyn Dawn who began educating children in the
early 50's. She bought and operated her first
school in Manhattan Beach---a preschool. Seeing
growth opportunities along the beach area, Miss
Dawn sold her Manhattan Beach school and bought a
new facility in Redondo Beach that also included
two swimming pools. There she taught swimming and
the ABC's to hundreds of local children. Every year
her preschool program grew and eventually she
needed a site that would house her dream: providing
a high quality educational experience for children.
In 1961, Miss Dawn moved into the Palos Verdes area
and founded RHCDS. Two years later, with very
little assistance, she broke ground at the corner
of Palos Verdes Drive North and Crenshaw Blvd., and
realized her dream - - - Rolling Hills Country Day
School.
In
1988, Gary Stokoe, Miss Dawn's grandson and a prior
student of Country Day School from the 1960's,
joined her as Co-Director. In 1994, Mr. Stokoe
became both the owner and Director. The curriculum
grew to include newer, innovative teaching
strategies and technologies, broadening both the
teachers' and students' experiences. Today a more
cooperative learning approach to education along
with a heightened awareness and sensitivity to
children's individual learning styles fills the
classroom teaching and management
style.
Both
Miss Dawn's and Mr. Stokoe's belief in the value of
family involvement in their children's education,
combined with a richly diverse curriculum,
continues to drive Country Day School's direction.
