WELCOME
TO THE RHCDS MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Middle School of Rolling Hills Country Day
School reflects the school's concern for children
of this transitional age. All classes stress the
skills needed for success in future years,
including the heightening of intellectual
curiosity, the development of analytical thinking
and problem-solving abilities, the exercise and
refinement of imagination, and the development of
clear and creative expression. Teachers endeavor to
foster greater academic and personal independence
and excellence for each student. The passage from
Lower School (grades K-5) to Middle School (grades
6-8) is gradual yet firm and is based upon the
academic and social maturity of the students.
Middle school students need a structured and caring
environment in which to make sense of their "new
selves." During the middle school years, children
become more independent and need special guidance
and understanding in working with peers and adults.
Developmentally, young adolescents:
are,
as a group, widely diverse.
are
engaged in self-exploration and
self-definition.
are
ready and eager to participate in their
home, school and religious
communities.
need
and want positive relationships with both
peers and adults.
continue
to need structure and clearly set
limits.
need
and desire increased levels of
autonomy.
have
a very high energy level.
need
opportunities to achieve competence and
success.
The entire program of the RHCDS Middle School is
designed to meet these needs. The expectations for
students are high, both academically and
personally. The faculty and administration work
diligently to provide a challenging yet supportive
environment, while, at the same time, offering
various educational opportunities for their
growth.
