Kindergarten

Students applying for Kindergarten meet in small groups with one of our classroom teachers. For Kindergarten, we observe students as they interact during group activities, individual activities, and free play. We evaluate them as they engage in a variety of activities that measure the development of their large and small motor skills, their ability to listen to instructions in both a group and individual setting, and their ability to transition from one activity to another.

First Grade

Children applying to First Grade meet in small groups with one of our classroom teachers. In First Grade we evaluate their readiness to handle First Grade academics. Individual and group activities center on reading, writing, and mathematics. In addition, teachers observe their skills at listening, following directions, interacting with one another, and transitioning from one activity to the next.

Grades 2-8

Each applicant for Grades 2 - 8 is given a standardized examination in reading comprehension and mathematics. In addition, a writing sample is required from each student applying to grades 2-8.

How are Decisions Made?

The Admissions Committee makes its recommendations to the Head of the Lower or Middle School. Standardized test scores, past academic records, current teacher evaluations and recommendations, and classroom observations on the day of testing are all factors considered by the Admissions Committee. Parent interviews are required for students applying for Grades 6-8. Our goal is to put together a compatible student body for each classroom.
